2020 Annual Report to the Community

2019 was a very busy year at the library! Our total circulation increased more than 13% this year, making 2019 another record breaking year for us! In fact, since we moved to our new building in 2015, our circulation has increased 36% !  We are the 2nd highest circulating library in all of Allegany County, just below Wellsville’s library. On an average day we see approximately 69 people come through our doors to check out items, use our public computers, attend a library program or class, send or receive faxes, make copies, scan and use our Wi-Fi.  

The Wide Awake Club Library provides current, popular materials to serve the recreational and informational needs of our patrons of all ages.  As a fully automated library, our patrons can access our online catalog, along with the catalogs of all libraries in the 5-county Southern Tier Library System from their home computers. In addition, through the STLS Interloan system, our ability to provide materials to our patrons is greatly enhanced. We also have access to a world-wide online database to search and provide ‘hard-to-find’ materials for our patrons that, otherwise, would not be found in the system. Patrons are able to access free downloadable audio and eBooks through STLS’s Overdrive website. New to Overdrive is the Libby app. which makes it easier than ever to download audio and ebooks. FREEGAL-free digital music is available to download, as well as commercial-free streaming. RB Digital allows patrons to access free magazines. All of these online links can be found on our website at www.fillmorelibrary.com.  

In 2019, at the Wide Awake Club Library:                                        

  • 47,800 materials were circulated.   Our HIGHEST circ. stats EVER!  
  • 20,657 people visited our library.                                        
  • 3,627 patrons are registered borrowers.     
  •  306 Adult/Children’s programs were offered with 
  • 3,213 total attendance.  This is 110 more programs than last year with 478 more attending!       
  • 8,197 items were inter-loaned for our patrons. 
  • 18 memorials, gifts or donations were given.  
  • 2,876 people used our public computers. 
  • “Digital WAC Library users” checked out 4,422 digital audiobooks and eBooks. (almost 1,000 more than last year!) 

The 2019 Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories” was a great success. 

  • 167 local children registered for the program (53 more than last year!) and read for a combined total of 980 hours! 
  • 27 children’s programs were held during July and August with 419 children/caregivers attending. 
  • 36 young adults registered for our Tween/Teen Summer Reading Program to “Read and Rate a Book” and read a combined total of 88 books!  
  • During the Summer Reading months of July and August we circulated 3,203 children’s and young adult books!   
  • 51 adults registered for our Adult Summer Reading Challenge and read a total of 157 books. 

The library is open to serve the public 47 hours per week, due in part to the continued support of our loyal volunteers at the circulation desk. These desk volunteers are:

2020 at the Library 

  • The Allegany county SPCA will be bringing KITTENS (and maybe even more furry friends!) on Tuesday, February 18th at 11:30 after Story Time. 
  • FLASH BOOK SALE! We have TOO MANY BOOKS to wait until our Annual May book Sale, so we are having a 3 DAY MINI BOOK SALE Thursday March 5th – Saturday March 7th during open hours. Buy a library bag for $5 and fill it for free, or hardcover are $.50 and paperbacks are $.50.  We will still be having our Memorial Weekend Book Sale! 
  • Escape to the Library After School! Grades 5+ can sign up at FCS to walk to the library after school and a bus picks the kids up at 4:20 to take them back to school to take their late bus home. Every Wednesday at 3:30 we offer a variety of after school STEM programs for all ages. Children 1st grade and younger need an adult with them. For program details check our website or pick up an after school calendar to see what we have planned each week.   
  • NEW! Baby & Me Time – Moms, Dads, caregivers and their babies/toddlers are welcome to join us the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of every month at 11:00am. We’ll have interactive stories, songs, fun with puppets, socializing and more! This will be a wiggly, giggly good time!  
  • Bring the World to the Library continues into 2020This is partially funded by the fundraising efforts of the ladies of the Wide Awake Club. Each month we’ll have a different museum, zoo, aquarium, or organization come to the library -bringing live animals, reptiles, marine life, various science activities and MUCH MORE! On Saturday, March 21st the Genesee Country Museum of Mumford will be here at 10:00am to explore the science and history behind maple sugar and syrup production. We’ll learn how to identify a maple tree and then get to try your hand at “tapping” a tree, discover how sap is turned into syrup and then taste the finished product! We’ll be having PANCAKES and syrup afterward! Then on April 25th from 10am-noon Mike Morton from Sun-Dance-Kids Farm will be here with BABY ANIMALS!  
  • Sewing at the library-This spring we’ll be focusing on planning and making QUILTS! Volunteer Katherine Tiblow will lead these workshops starting Saturday March 14th from 9:30-noon. We’ll continue to meet one Saturday every month until summer, check at the library for upcoming dates.  For the March workshop bring your note pad and we’ll help you plan your quilt. Children with a parent are welcome to attend. Space is limited so you must register for this FREE class at the library. 
  • NEW! Adult Craft Night- Bring a friend or meet some new ones while we have fun making various arts and craft projects. Check at the library to see what we’re working on each month.     
  • Adult Coloring Night– Join us on the 3rd Monday of every month from 6:00-7:30pm. We have all NEW supplies, or bring your own if you like.   
  • We now have TWO Book Clubs– an afternoon AND an evening club. Our afternoon book club meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 1:30 and our evening book club meets the last Monday of the month at 7pm. Check at the library to see what books we are currently reading. 
  • Our weekly preschool Story Time with Miss Bonnie continues every Tuesday at 10:30. Join us for fun stories, easy crafts and snacks.   
  • Cookbook Club-We choose a different cookbook every month, and then you pick a recipe from the book and bring your dish to our monthly meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:30. This is a fun and welcoming group of people- please join us!  
  • The Allegany County Creative Writers Group meets weekly to share their work, free-write and support one another. This is a fun-loving, congenial group for the purpose of providing a place for other fun-loving, congenial writer types to spend time together. Writers supporting writers! Please feel free to join in. Check our website (fillmorelibrary.com) or their Facebook page for meeting dates and times. 
  • Our library continues to be a host site during 2020 for the Artists Among Us touring art program from Allegany County, NY. The artwork will be displayed in our McGlynn Community Room.  “Artists Among Us” is a touring art program created by the Fountain Arts Center, Belmont, NY. The Artists Among Us program is funded in part by the New York State Council On The Arts Decentralization ReGrant Program with support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature administered through the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. 
  • Our Angel Gown Project continues through March. These gowns are given to families in our surrounding areas for babies that never make it home from the hospital. We are in need of sewing volunteers to help with this, only very basic skills are needed. We’re looking for donations of wedding gowns and pink and baby blue prom dresses. Volunteers meet every Tuesday from 5-7pm and Wednesday from 10-2pm.  
  • The Alzheimer’s Association will be at the library quarterly to provide preventative and healthy living programs (for adults of all ages), support services, and other resources for care partners and those living with dementia. On March 24th at 5:30pm they’ll be presenting: Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body.   

Thanks to a grant from the Tri-County Arts Council and fundraising efforts of the Wide Awake Club we’ll be hosting our “Summer Music Series” featuring musical events during the months of July and August, 2020 to be held at the Fillmore Park Pavilion. This program is funded in part by the New York State Council On The Arts Decentralization ReGrant Program with support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature administered through the Tri- County Arts Council. 

We are gladly accepting book donations for our Annual Book Sale to be held this May during Memorial Day weekend. 

The library is looking for a tech- savvy volunteer to help people with their various e-Reader devices and laptops on an occasional “as needed” basis. Contact the library if you would like to help out. 

Maintenance, replacement and upgrades of computer equipment will be provided as the budget warrants.  Expansions of all collections of library materials will be of primary concern as the budget warrants.  Board meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm. The public is always welcome to attend.
