Local History Collection: Defining Our Past
The local history collection in the “old library” was held in the old bank vault. It was a conglomeration of scrapbooks, books, clippings, newspapers and other memorabilia that somehow made their way to the library. Lucky for us! The thought of our new library stirred on some volunteers to take on the daunting task of finally organizing the wealth of information we knew was there. It is a work in progress, although the first year’s efforts have remarkably organized the bulk of the materials and they are now available to library patrons in a searchable format.
To streamline our collection, “local history” for our library includes the areas and towns serviced by the Fillmore Central School District and major publications related to Allegany County.
We are a small library, and for security reasons, the collection is kept in the “closed stacks”. If you find something of interest after using the available index, ask the library staff to get it for you.NONE OF THESE ITEMS MAY BE CHECKED OUT; YOU MAY HOWEVER, VIEW THEM HERE OR MAKE PHOTOCOPIES OF THESE RESEARCH MATERIALS.
Likewise, we are not in a position to do research for you. If you contact Kathy Breuer at kb03264@gmail.com, she will answer some BRIEF emails or questions regarding the collection for you.
Some of our links are “under construction”.
We are always looking for donations of clippings, scrapbooks, a few Fillmore Yearbooks, and of course old photographs and genealogies of local families. Please contact Melissa Mills at mjmouser@yahoo.com if you have any of these items. We are willing to scan and return items if you wish.
